Abstract: This presentation describes an exemplary case of successful sustainable tourism development in Arusha, Tanzania. It starts with a critical analysis of the concepts of ‘sustainability’ and ‘success’, presents and embeds the African example in a more global tourism context involving private as well as public stakeholders, and ends with a general reflection on what is needed to create successful models of tourism development.
