Abstract: In addressing the complex matter of designers' empathy with people they are designing for, this paper advances 'dialogue' as a strategy for building and using empathy during designing. It examines why developing empathy is so difficult when users are absent, and explores the potential of dialogue to help address these difficulties, both at theoretical and at practical levels. The key characteristics and the challenges associated with this dialectical approach are presented.
