Abstract: ‘Ieder Voor Allen’ (IVA) as a member of AgriCord tries to assess ‘small holder contract farming’ in order to formulate a framework of strengthening farmers’ organisations for this purpose. Therefore, IVA organised a seminar as a constructive exchange between farmers’ organisations, cooperatives, agribusinesses, agri-agencies and relevant NGO’s. In support to the whole exercise IVA contracted HIVA (Hoger Instituut voor de Arbeid) to realize a study on ‘Efficient contract farming through strong Farmers’ Organisations in a partnership with Agribusiness’ and to supply technical support to the seminar.
The methodology applied to build a programme proposal on contract farming was based on a desktop study. These core aspects were formulated in a frame for the different cases presented during the two-day seminar. This report contains results of both exercises and consists of six sections. In the first section, we present how the topic of contract farming has been identified and why IVA organised an international seminar on this topic. We further explain the applied methodology. The second section presents a literature review on contract farming and the possible roles of farmers’ organisations. The third section contains the crosscutting issues related to contract farming, which resulted from the papers presented, and interviews carried out during the seminar. The methodology applied by IFAP DCC members to come to a set of priorities for contract farming and its results, a logical framework to work on these priorities in future, are described in the fourth section. We develop the overall conclusions in section five. Section six in annex shares the case-by-case information of the different cases presented during the seminar.
