Co-operation, social responsibility and fair trade in Europe pages:101-124
This book summarizes a European research programme focussing upon the important contribution made by the cooperative sector to the growth of Fair Trade. The role of cooperatives is illustrated by studies carried out in the UK (by the Co-operative College), Italy (by CTM Altro Mercato), Sweden (by SCC) and Belgium (by HIVA). Fair Trade organisations appear to be drawn to the co-operative legal form for its flexible combination of social commitment and enterprise. At the same time, Fair Trade provides the co-operative movement with an obvious way to fulfil its societal mission in an increasingly globalized world.
