A multilayered mathematical model has been developed for optothermal data analysis of thermally homogeneous but optically inhomogeneous samples. Based on this model, an inverse algorithm using neural networks was designed for calculating the depth profile of an optical excitation absorption coefficient from optothermal measurement data. The performance of the algorithm was tested on simulated data and measured data. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.
