Abstract:

Cervical cytology remains the standard method to screen a population for premalignant cervical pathology in order to decrease the incidence and mortality by cervical cancer. The efficiency of the cytology screening improves by organising screeningprograms and by continuously motivating women to participate in these programs. HPV tests exert a modest additional role in cervical screening. The presence of high risk HPV types in ASC smears is an argument to perform a colposcopy instead of repeating the smear within six months.
