Abstract: This keynote paper is the report of a working group of CIRP-members on Innovation. Considering the real effort made by the public authorities to “creating a favorable climate” for research transfer, the question is raised as to the reason of the relatively poor transfer of research into new products; many research products do not reach the stage of “industrial credibility”.

Among the most successful means to improve the situation the report recommends the action of a specialized agent, the organisation of appropriate interfacing bodies, and positive measures to strengthen the link between the inventor and his invention, especially during the first phases of the transfer process.
