Abstract:

While the efficiency of LNG-IUS (Mirena®) as a reversible and acceptable contraceptive method is well-known, experience with its non-contraceptive applications is rapidly expanding. The LNG-IUS is indeed effective in reducing heavy menstrual bleeding and improves the quality of life of women with menorrhagia as effectively as a surgical treatment. It also provides endometrial protection in (peri) menopausal women on estrogen replacement therapy and may be beneficial in patients with endometriosis, adenomyosis, simple endometrial hyperplasia and fibroids, while the breast cancer risk is not increased. For some women with atypical endometrial hyperplasia and early stage endometrial cancer, who are unable or unwilling to undergo surgery, the LNG-IUS may constitute an alternative treatment.
