Abstract:

The main cause of clinical progression in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seropositive individuals is ongoing HIV replication which causes damage to and ultimately destruction of the immune system. Currently the only successful way to reduce this viral replication is anti-HIV therapy. Combination therapy with several drugs, rather than monotherapy, is the current standard clinical practice. The major problem in combination therapy is viral resistance.
