Title: Note about the Four Precepts of the Church in Chinese texts (ca. 1600-1800),

Series Title: Sino-Western cultural relations journal vol:29 pages:5-13
Abstract: Besides a short introduction to the subject as indicated in the title, the main theme is the difference between two ‘first’ editions of an early 17th-century catechism (a Chinese translation and adaptation of the Cartilha of Marcos Jorge S.J.), which shows that initially the missionaries included the precept of paying tithes. Rather soon, however, they skipped this precept, the observance of which must have been difficult to enforce, as most of their converts were rather poor people.
