Fever in returning travellers
Fever after travelling to the (sub)tropics can be caused by tropical diseases and cosmopolitan infections. The spectrum of the imported fever varies according to the destination, the duration of the stay, the travel conditions and the activities. Malaria remains the leading cause.
The diagnostic protocol follows seven steps: destination, time course, prevention and risks, signs and symptoms, incidence and severity of disease and further investigation.
