The thermal behavior of the metallomesogens [Ln(C12C16dbm)3(phen)], where Ln = La, Nd, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Er, Yb; C12C16dbm = 1-(4-dodecyloxyphenyl)-3-(4-hexadecyloxyphenyl)-propane-1,3-dionate; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) was investigated. The complexes of the light lanthanides (Ln = La, Nd) are not mesomorphic, whereas the complexes of the heavy lanthanides (Ln = Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Er, Yb) exhibit a monotropic smectic A phase. A model for the molecular organization of the molecules in the smectic A phase is proposed. The luminescence properties of the complexes [Eu(C12C16dbm)3(phen)], [Er(C12C16dbm)3(phen)] and [Yb(C12C16dbm)3(phen)] were investigated.
