Drying processes are mostly performed on an empirical basis in industrial applications. In order to develop controllers for optimal drying, a model that predicts the moisture concentration is required. This research focuses on the nonlinear Fickian model. Nonlinear models mostly require nonlinear control algorithms for optimal design. The use of an estimator, which approximates the model behaviour by estimating the states, is very convenient for nonlinear control purposes. This paper describes the development of an estimator for drying processes. Its performance is compared with the prediction capacity of the Fickian model and convergence of the model states is proved.
