Abstract: Several arguments based mainly on calorimetric measurements are presented supporting the idea that during low-temperature ageing of Al-Cu-Mg alloys, plate-like Guinier-Preston-Bagaryatsky (GPB) zones form from nanoclusters via a nucleation-and-growth-controlled mechanism. GPB zones (and not clusters) are considered to be the main origin of the heat release and hardness increase.
