Abstract: Alkylation of isobutane with 1-butene on HZSM-5 and HZSM-11 zeolite catalysts was investigated. Compared to large pore zeolites, higher temperatures (> 100-degrees-C) are required and the alkylate components show a significantly lower degree of branching. These differences are mainly attributed to shape selectivity effects, the energetically most favourable routes of carbocation chemistry being suppressed under the spatial constraints in pentasils.
