Abstract: We study stable and metastable surface states in adsorbed liquid mixtures from the point of view of classical nucleation theory. We propose an interpretation of recent measurements of the lifetime of metastable thin wetting films, invoking the existence of a surface spinodal. A preliminary account of this work is to be found in D. Bonn and J.O. Indekeu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 74, 3844 (1995). (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
