Abstract: Designing is increasingly acknowledged as a way of producing knowledge. By
consequence, any endeavor in architecture to make more effective use of the knowledge
available should draw on an understanding of design practice as a valuable knowledge
base distinct from academia. After investigating what role (if any) the doctorate by design
may play in this endeavor, the paper explores two mechanisms that allow for crossfertilization
and mutual reinforcement of practice and academia while respecting the
individuality of both. The first example engages seasoned professionals in exchanging the
tacit, practice-based knowledge embedded in building projects for the up-to-date
academic knowledge of students and interns. The second uses participatory observation
of competition designs by way of data collection. Obviously, practice-academia exchange
poses considerable challenges. However, judging from the initiatives described here,
some practitioners and academics are already a long way in addressing them.
