In Love with the Past: On Mate Choice, Fate, and Heredity.
In this article, the author concentrates on the Szondian amendment to Freud’s theory of object choice. Szondi puts the impact of early childhood, stressed by Freud in order to understand the role of ‘fate’ in object choice, strongly into perspective. Attempting to understand this fate, Szondi works up the significance of the hereditary determinants at great length. Recent findings seem to establish proof of the priority he gives to the hypothesis of a similar hereditary background as an important criterion in choosing our partner. Far even more than Freud, Szondi makes clear that what the object choice is concerned, our future is in the past.
