Abstract: It is argued that social-psychological research may be relevant for the study of linguistic, specially "semantic" processes. In this perspective a theoretical framework is developed according to which cognitive organization is shaped by forces belonging to three categories: (a) intrasubjective field forces, (b) environmental forces, and (c) behavioral-adaptive forces. Linguistic implications are presented.
