Abstract: We investigate which subsidiary roles are assigned by Japanese multinational firms to their manufacturing affiliates in the Netherlands in 1998, using the subsidiary role framework of White and Poynter (1984) and adaptations of it by Birkinshaw and Morrison (1995). Of the 24 subsidiaries responding to the survey, eleven were identified as miniature replicas, five as product specialists, three as strategic independents, three as marketing satellites, and two as rationalized manufacturers.
