Abstract: Second-pillar pensions for employees in the private sector in Belgium have a long history, but the real development started after World War II. In short, up until now, setting up an employer-sponsored pension scheme has not been compulsory though, once in place, employees must participate. The Belgian government is proposing a totally revised legal framework for 2nd-pillar pensions, with the aim of encouraging the development of retirement pension schemes set up on an industry-wide basis
