Abstract: This article examines possible developments of the Belgian energy system up to the year 2010 under different assumptions related to the international environment and the Belgian environmental policy. A 'business as usual' reference scenario is computed in which the international energy price follows a smoothly increasing path and where no special energy and environmental policy measures are taken. The alternatives are an increase of 40 percent of the oil price, the imposition of a carbon dioxide tax and more severe norms for sulfur dioxide and NO [subscript x] emissions. The impact of the higher energy price remains limited if the economy is sufficiently flexible. The environmental policy measures can also be implemented without a too heavy cost for the economy if the production structure can be reoriented towards less energy intensive sectors and prices and wages are flexible
