Abstract: Several places in the literature on mathematics and science education indicate that students tend to apply linear models where they are not applicable. This tendency is called 'illusion of linearity'. The present paper aims at giving an overview of different utterances of the phenomenon, and at providing a conceptual analysis. First, we investigate the concept of linearity and its properties. Second, we summarize and comment on several cases of unwarranted linear reasoning - coming from the literature and from our own empirical research - in order to unravel the conceptual similarities and differences between the utterances of the illusion of linearity. Finally, we consider the psychological and educational factors that seem to be at the roots of the occurrence and persistence of the over-reliance on linearity.
