Abstract:

This lecture was inspired by an article of J.H.A. Lokin in 1993 in which Lokin referred to Homeric references in the Institutes of Justinian and in Theophilus’ Paraphrasis. In that lecture I examine and compare Homeric references in two other later Byzantine sources which reflect legal practice (the Peira, 11th c. and a verdict by the bishop Apokaukos, 13th c.).
