Abstract:

Disorders of function of the oesophagus will usually be manifested by symptoms of heartburn, regurgitation, dysphagia, chest pain or globus. By definition, patients with functional disorders have had the known structural and biochemical abnormalities that affect the oesophagus excluded by appropriate tests. The report is aimed at developing guidelines for the better definition of functional disorders of the oesophagus and at providing a rationale for their diagnosis. By review of the physiological and psychosocial factors contributing to these syndromes, recommendations regarding management and future research can be developed.
